Technical Writer/ Document Control Specialist


  • A Technical Writer  is required for a  contract  position in  State College, PA.

Description:
  • Creates, develops, plans, writes and edits complex operational, instructional, interactive electronic technical manuals (IETMs), maintenance or test procedures for paper, multimedia or web-based publication
  • Conducts interviews with various users and technical staff to gather data for documentation
  • Researches and translates technical information into manuals and/or web-based documents for nontechnical and technical users
  • Acquires subject knowledge by interviewing product developers, observing performance of production methods, referring to technical specifications, blueprints, engineering illustrations, and trade journals
  • Recommends formats responsive to technical and customer requirements
  • Produces products that conform to the company documentation and quality assurance standards
  • Strives to grow expertise in the fundamentals of their job (i.e. production tools, projects, DoD MIL STD, IETMS, etc.)
  • Gathers text and materials (such as engineering models, drawings, schematics, spreadsheets, etc.) by researching products and data, conducting interviews with various users, technical staff and subject matter experts in order to analyze, interpret and convert the information into end-user military standard (MIL STD) documentation and reference materials such as maintenance allocation charts (MACs) and repair parts and special tools lists (RPSTLs)
  • Documents engineering processes and specifications by editing software developer and engineering staff's notes and procedures and applying formatting in order to support the writing and publication of hardware and software test procedures, white papers, read-me files, etc.
  • Pro-actively informs the technical documentation lead of assignment status, issues or concerns, including issues of scope, schedule, process, and quality through informal meetings, and emailed status reports to keep the technical documentation lead informed
  • Ensures the accurate preparation of documents for interim and final delivery to customer by participating in peer review of documentation; work is reviewed by senior staff at frequent intervals
  • Often interacts with: Internal customers, External customers and subcontractors, Department personnel, Consultants, Members of Engineering and Technical Staff

 

Required Skills:
  • Associate's degree or equivalent is required plus a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience

 

 
  • Distinct knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar
  • Distinct written communication skills and the ability to tailor communication to target audience
  • Distinct verbal communication, listening and interviewing skill
  • Distinct ability to research highly technical information and interpret data
  • Distinct understanding of DoD MIL Standards and style guides and the ability to adhere to and implement such standards to technical documentation
  • Distinct experience with editing and production tools (i.e. FrameMaker, MS Word, Arbor Text, etc.)
  • Knowledgeable in the use of publication systems
  • Distinct interpersonal skills; able to communicate effectively with all levels of employees
  • Distinct ability to manage complex tasks from inception to end
  • Distinct customer interface skills and understanding of customer needs
  • Works on problems of limited scope
  • Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data from which answers can be readily obtained
  • Travel may be required
  • Works under the direct guidance of senior staff on day-to-day work and on new assignments
  • Normally receives detailed instructions on all work
